Stingray, octopus, turtle and giant lobsters - First dives in Similan Islands

*Suomeksi lopussa*

The day arrived, and the bus came to pick us up from the hotel. Using traditional Thai city speed (=80-100km/h) we we're taken via couple of hotels to the dock and onboard Stingray vessel. Amazingly big dive deck and comfortable salon. And get this: lunch cooked fresh on the boat!

Sea Bees crew welcomed us and told the basic routines and "rules" on the boat. Then we got to either assemble our gear or enjoy breakfast service on the boat. Offcourse we did both :) The trip to Similan Islands took about 2 hours and our divemaster took the time to brief us and get to know us and our wishes. Ten points for Gerben in hospitality !

Our lovely divemaster Gerben
We were diving in group of four + divemaster. After the first two minutes of the first dive I saw my first ever stingray. And the best part is that I got it on video too! So here presenting my first ever scuba video:

Straight after the stingray I saw an octopus AND a turtle. It was so hard to deside what to photograph, but I chose the octopus. I have only one unsharp image of an octopus from last years dives, so it was worth following the octopus around for a bit. And all the other divers focused on the turtle so I got the octopus all to myself.

Octopus going to hiding
As we went along, we got to see huge lobsters hiding under a rock. Couldn't take a good picture, so you have to settle for my word. Their tentacles where at least 1m long. Three of them there were, but I saw only two.

After this sort of a dive, the second had no chance in comparison. There was still really nice coral and rocks to look at. And yet again we saw an octopus!!!  And the lovely, cute, little baby sharks hiding under the rocks.

Did get a shot of the turtle too :)
We had been talking to another divemaster on the boat, that knew a lot about photography, and he had promised to look at our photos and give tips. Oh the embarrassment and learning experience about our nice cameras! My shots are terrible, but I did learn some things that will be thought off on the next dives.

  • Always put the sun behind you
  • You don't need to fill the whole lens with the white slate, to get the white balance adjusted, 1/3 will be just enough
  • Always, ALWAYS try to get the angle right by swimming and locating yourself. For me that means NO pictures taken straight from above or straight against a coral reef

I think we are headed for a photography course to get more tips later on. Not tomorrow though, because the pro is already occupied with another student. He still promised to bring us already something to read on the boat tomorrow to prepare for the course. Loving the dedication.

*Suomi osuus alkaa*
